Ridicule and teasing don’t help a person who is afraid. It offers no solution — only adds embarrassment to the present fear. And therefore the worry of being embarrassed could be a most uncomfortable one. It’s psychologically unsound to attempt to embarrass individuals out of their fears. It does no smart — only harm — to pull an individual’s fears out in front of his friends. It makes him feel that he “loses face” with them. And fears are never overcome by tearing down confidence.
Some individuals assume that they can help a frightened person by “forcing” him. Or perhaps they’ll take the unsuspecting victim without notice to attempt to encourage him that he need not be afraid. Oh, they meant no harm — but it was not only what they did but how they did it. And therefore the harm they inflicted was permanent.

A second later, Diane, bubbling over with joy, acquired the front door.

But it wasn’t a joke to Diane. It was a horrible, horrifying nightmare. Phil and Dan grew serious once they saw their sister’s terrified expression and heard her hysterical screams. What had they done?
