Live Musical Act

Athena Reich

Athena Reich is a New York City based singer, writer and actress and has been performing in TV, Film, Radio and Theater since age 12. She has done everything from sketch comedy to playing a crack-head on TV to painting herself gold and standing still in Times Square for tips.

She began playing classical piano at age 4 and composed her first piece by age 8. At 12 her Improv Comedy Troupe won Best Comedy at the YTV Youth Achievement Awards in 1989 (Host Jim Carrey & Judge Eugene Levy). At age 15, Athena taught herself guitar and soon afterwards began performing in cafes, restaurants, and clubs.

Athena released her first album, “a sly sardonic grin” in 1998. “Sly” is a compilation of songs (guitar, voice & drums) and spoken word written between the ages of 16-20. Her music and lyrics, from the beginning, have been exceptionally poignant, innovative, and bold.

She earned her BFA in Music from Concordia University in Montreal. In Montreal, Athena opened for Veda Hille, appeared on college radio, and performed at “Funky Ass Folk Babes”. In April 2000 Athena moved to New York City and has been performing in NYC festivals, tours and shows ever since.

Earlier this year, Athena played SXSW where she hosted and performed 4 showcases in 3 days with “Go Girls Music” and “Women in Rock”. In February 2003, Athena embarked on a Northeast tour and was featured in major newspapers. She has played CBGB’s, The Slipper Room (NY), Baggot Inn (NY), Bar B (NY), LadyFest East, The Music Gallery (Toronto), Free Times (Toronto), Cabaret (Montreal), Keneally’s (St. Louis), Neitzche’s (Buffalo) and countless other festivals, bars and cafes across the U.S. and Canada.

Athena is co-founder of SirensWildRide, an all-female music showcase that will embark on a national tour in September 2003.  Go to www.sirenswildride.com for details.

Recently, Athena was featured in Marie Claire Magazine.  In Sept. 02, she was commissioned by the Wildlife Conservation Society to write a poem for the New York Aquarium. Just Plain Folks recently nominated “Crickety Crack” for Best Spoken Word. Her music is played on radio stations across the continent and throughout the web. She has performed off-Broadway as “Drag King Billy Bob” in 69 and as “Mrs. Muldour” in the national tour of in Superfudge.

Athena is constantly dazzling theater audiences with her rock opera ATHENA UNDER ATTACK. This edgy, emotional, and deeply personal one-act takes place on 9/11 and explores the connection between domestic and global violence. The cast album will be available in July 2003. ATHENA UNDER ATTACK has been performed at The Producer’s Club, The 14th St. Y Theater, and LadyFest East. ATHENA UNDER ATTACK has been accepted to perform at The Toronto Theater Fringe Festival in July 2003.

Athena Reich is a rare new talent. Her music is unique, evocative, and disturbingly honest. If it’s not the gut-wrenching lyrics or haunting chordal progressions that will floor you, then it’s her voice: soulful, primal and intensely powerful. Definitely one to watch!

Exciting projects are in the works.  She's recording a new album in Montreal (with a full band) and booking a massive east coast/midwest/parts of Canada tour for the fall  & winter. She just released the remastered recording of "Athena Under Attack". Find out where to buy it below. Read on for how you can help this DIY (do-it-yourself) music queen.
